Rochester NY Murder-Suicide: Father and Son Axel Hernandez Killed in Greece Shooting

GREECE, A community is grieving after father Nick Rivas and his 4-year-old son, Axel Hernandez, were identified as the two people found dead in what police are investigating as a murder-suicide following a shooting in the town of Greece, New York.
Officers with the Greece Police Department responded to a welfare check Monday night at a residence on Squareview Lane in the Fetzner Square Apartments & Townhomes complex. Upon entering the home, police discovered two individuals deceased. The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that both deaths involved a firearm, according to authorities.
Police confirmed that the victims were a man and his young son but initially declined to release their names, citing the sensitive nature of the case and the involvement of a child. In a statement, the Greece Police Department said there is no threat to the public. Officials emphasized that the decision to withhold identities was made out of compassion for surviving family members and a commitment to preserving their privacy and dignity during an extraordinarily difficult time.
“This remains a deeply tragic event,” police said, adding that the incident is still under investigation and that further information will be released at an appropriate time, consistent with investigative integrity and respect for the family.
As news of the loss spread, Axel’s mother, Alexis Hernandez, shared a heartfelt tribute to her son, describing him as her “sweet, perfect, innocent baby” and a “shining star” whose life was senselessly and tragically taken.
“Axel was one of one. My king…my absolute reason for being,” she wrote. “Being Axel’s mom was the greatest honor of my life. He was everything and more to me. I will grieve him and look for him everywhere, and I will honor him for the rest of my days.”
Axel Hernandez was born May 26, 2021, and died January 27, 2026. His mother expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from family, friends, and the community, noting that their love and strength will be needed in the days and years ahead.
The deaths of Nick Rivas and young Axel have left a profound impact on loved ones and the wider community. Authorities say their focus remains on completing the investigation with care while supporting those affected by this devastating loss.
