Edmonton Community Seeks Answers After Death of Prashant Sreekumar Following ER Visit

Community mourns loss of Prashant Sreekumar, a 44-year-old accountant and devoted father of three whose unexpected passing has deeply affected the Edmonton community and renewed public discussion about emergency room wait times in Alberta’s healthcare system.
Prashant Sreekumar passed away on December 22, 2025, after suffering what early information suggests was a cardiac arrest at Grey Nuns Community Hospital. His family has stated that he waited more than eight hours in the emergency department before receiving further medical attention.
According to family members, Sreekumar arrived at the hospital on Monday evening reporting severe chest pain, which he described to medical staff as a “15 out of 10.” Concerned about the seriousness of his condition, he sought emergency care believing he might be experiencing a heart-related issue.
Shortly after arriving, Sreekumar underwent an electrocardiogram (ECG). His family said he was later informed that the test did not indicate any immediate abnormalities. He was given Tylenol for pain relief and instructed to remain in the emergency room waiting area. They reported that no additional diagnostic testing or continuous monitoring was conducted during that time.
As the hours passed, Sreekumar’s condition reportedly worsened. His wife said he began experiencing blurred vision, dry heaving, and increasing physical distress. At one point, his blood pressure was reportedly measured at 210, a level considered critically high. Despite these developments, his family said he remained in the waiting area for more than eight hours, raising concerns about whether his condition was reassessed as his symptoms escalated.
According to the family, Sreekumar was eventually called into a treatment area. Moments after sitting down, he reportedly clutched his chest and lost consciousness. Medical staff attempted emergency intervention, but he did not regain consciousness and was later pronounced dead. Early information indicates that he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Prashant Sreekumar is survived by his wife and three children, ages 3, 10, and 14. Loved ones remember him as a dedicated professional, a caring husband, and an involved father whose life revolved around his family. His sudden death has left relatives grieving and seeking answers.
Covenant Health, which operates Grey Nuns Community Hospital, confirmed that the case has been referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The investigation is expected to review the circumstances surrounding Sreekumar’s death, including triage decisions, wait times, and whether appropriate care protocols were followed.
Beyond the personal tragedy, Sreekumar’s passing has sparked widespread public reaction. Many residents across Alberta have shared concerns on social media about emergency room overcrowding and prolonged wait times, expressing fear that similar situations could affect others. Healthcare advocates have renewed calls for systemic improvements, including increased staffing, better triage processes, and expanded emergency care resources.
As the investigation continues, the Edmonton community continues to remember Prashant Sreekumar for his life, his dedication to his family, and the legacy he leaves behind.
