Josh Cardiello, Former Buford High School Football Lineman, Dies at 30 in Georgia

BUFORD, GA — Josh Cardiello, a former Buford High School football lineman remembered for his strength on the field and loyalty off it, has died at the age of 30. His passing has led to an outpouring of grief from family, friends, and the wider Buford community. Mr. Cardiello died early Monday morning, and his family shared that he passed away at 6:25 a.m. in the hospital with loved ones at his side. In a statement, his partner described holding his hand as doctors pronounced his death, calling the loss “the hardest thing I’ve ever been through” and expressing concern for the future of their young daughter, Amelia.
A standout lineman during his time at Buford High School, Josh was known for his discipline, teamwork, and quiet leadership. Former teammates and coaches have remembered him as a dependable presence who embodied commitment both in athletics and in life. His dedication on the field was matched by the character he showed away from it, earning him lasting respect within the school and community.
Personal tragedy later shaped much of Josh’s advocacy work. Following the death of his brother, Jake, he became actively involved with Who We Play For, a nonprofit organization that promotes heart screenings for young people and works to improve access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs). His family said this mission was especially meaningful to him, noting that public access to AEDs—a cause he strongly supported—played a role in emergency efforts during his own medical crisis.
Tributes shared since his passing have highlighted Josh’s devotion as a friend, father, and partner, as well as his willingness to support others through loss and hardship. Many members of the community have come together to provide meals, messages of comfort, and practical assistance to his family in the days following his death.
Funeral services for Josh Cardiello will be held later this week at First Baptist Church in Buford. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Josh’s name to Who We Play For, continuing the advocacy that became an important part of his life and legacy.
