At approximately 12:18 a.m., two Swansea police officers in marked cruisers observed a white 2013 Infiniti G37 traveling westbound on Route 6, also known as Grand Army of the Republic Highway, at a very high rate of speed. Moments later, officers observed that the vehicle had collided with a blue 2022 Subaru Ascent traveling southbound on Route 136, also known as James Reynolds Road.

Swansea police arrived shortly after the crash, and Swansea Fire Department personnel were dispatched to assist. Both vehicles sustained catastrophic damage.

Authorities reported that the Subaru was fully engulfed in flames. First responders and bystanders attempted to extinguish the fire; however, both Carolyn and James Carcasi were pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 28-year-old driver of the Infiniti, identified as Demitri Sousa of Seekonk, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Swansea Police stated they were aware that the Infiniti had been the subject of a police pursuit and that the driver was reportedly wanted in connection with a homicide investigation in Cranston, Rhode Island. Officials noted that Swansea Police were alerted to be on the lookout for the vehicle but were not involved in the pursuit and were not actively pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash.
