Charlie Kirk Killing: Claims About Iran War and Motive Spark Debate

UNITED STATES, Former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent has raised questions about aspects of investigations into the killing of Charlie Kirk and the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump during a 2024 campaign rally in Butler.
Speaking in an interview with Tucker Carlson, Kent outlined concerns regarding what he described as unresolved issues and investigative limitations encountered during his time in government.
The interview marked his first public appearance since leaving his role.
Kent emphasized that he is not assigning responsibility to any specific country or group but argued that certain timelines and details warrant closer examination.
He referenced the July 2024 arrest of Asif Merchant, who was accused of involvement in a disrupted assassination plot linked to Iran, noting that the arrest occurred one day before the shooting at Trump’s Butler rally involving Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Kent suggested that investigators should have been able to more fully examine any possible connections, while also acknowledging that no confirmed link has been established.
According to Kent, efforts by the National Counterterrorism Center to pursue certain investigative leads were limited.
He also cited reports that oversight officials, including the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general, faced challenges when attempting to review aspects of the Butler incident.
During the interview, Kent also discussed the killing of Charlie Kirk, stating that in his view the case warranted additional scrutiny.
He said that while the suspect, identified as Tyler Robinson, has been described as acting alone, there were other potential leads and lines of inquiry that may not have been fully explored before the case shifted to state authorities.
Kent further referenced publicly available online activity that he said could suggest prior awareness of the attack by some individuals, adding that such information should be carefully reviewed to determine whether others were involved. However, he acknowledged that no conclusive evidence of a wider plot has been confirmed.
Throughout the discussion, Kent stressed that his concerns relate to investigative transparency and the importance of examining all credible leads, particularly in cases involving national security.
He stated that coordination challenges between agencies and limitations in information sharing may have affected the scope of the investigations.
Tucker Carlson noted the sensitivity of the issues discussed and said such claims would likely face scrutiny, while also supporting efforts to seek clarity.
Officials have not publicly confirmed many of the points raised in the interview.
Both incidents continue to draw public attention, with authorities stating that investigations are conducted based on available evidence and within established legal procedures.
