Following the tragedy, the Mission League boys basketball tournament championship game between Sierra Canyon and Notre Dame was canceled out of respect for the loss. The game, scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, was set to determine the league champion. Sierra Canyon entered as the No. 1 seed, with Notre Dame seeded No. 2.

In a message sent to ticket holders, the Sierra Canyon Athletics Department announced the cancellation of all athletic events for the day, citing the sudden loss within the school community. The department stated that all ticket holders would receive full refunds and thanked families for their understanding as the community focused on supporting students and families.

Because the CIF Southern Section regular-season calendar concludes on Wednesday, the championship game cannot be rescheduled. As a result, no Mission League champion will be named this year, though both schools agreed to submit final league standings based on tournament seeding.

Notre Dame High School also shared its support, with athletic director Alec Moss stating that in moments like these, competition takes a back seat to compassion and care for those affected.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal crash occurred shortly before 7:40 a.m. along Malibu Canyon Road near Pepperdine University. Authorities said a Tesla vehicle left the roadway and plunged approximately 30 feet down an embankment near Potter Drive before coming to rest in dense brush.

Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the scene and located the driver inside the vehicle, who was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP officials confirmed the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it has not been determined whether speed, road conditions, or mechanical factors played a role. The CHP West Valley Office is leading the investigation.

Sierra Canyon Head of School Jim Skrumbis addressed families in a letter sent Wednesday morning, expressing condolences and emphasizing the importance of community support. He confirmed that counselors and wellness staff would be available to students in the coming days and encouraged families to have open conversations at home.

As the Sierra Canyon community grieves, tributes continue to pour in honoring Hunter Langley’s life and character. While his life was cut tragically short, those who knew him say his kindness, spirit, and impact will not be forgotten. The community has asked for privacy for the Langley family as they mourn, while continuing to come together in compassion and support.
