Monica Nunn Grady, 41, who taught mathematics at New Hope Middle School, was terminated from her position on Wednesday after meeting with school administrators regarding accusations that she provided minor students with alcohol and tobacco products. One day after the Lowndes County School District ended her employment contract, investigators with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at her residence.

According to a Facebook release from the Lowndes County Mississippi Sheriff’s Office, Grady was taken into custody without incident and booked on a charge of child grooming. Authorities said the charge stems from allegations involving an inappropriate relationship with a minor student.

The sheriff’s office release cited Mississippi Code Section 97-5-32, defining child grooming as a pattern of conduct or a series of communications that a reasonable adult would recognize as an attempt to lure, persuade, or coerce a child under the age of 16 into an inappropriate, sexualized, or illegal relationship.

Investigators allege that Grady provided alcohol and tobacco products to multiple students and engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a minor. Officials stated that the case remains under active investigation and that additional charges may be filed as evidence continues to be reviewed. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said it is working closely with school officials and the District Attorney’s Office.

The arrest prompted strong reactions from members of the community, including parents who voiced concerns on social media about notification procedures and student safety. Some parents questioned why families were not informed earlier about the allegations involving the former educator.

Grady’s arrest comes three years after she was awarded a scholarship in 2023 to pursue a doctorate in education. According to a previous report by The Columbus Dispatch, she received a $1,000 graduate scholarship from Mississippi Professional Educators, an organization she had been a member of since 2013.

The same report stated that Grady earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi University for Women, a Master of Science degree from Mississippi State University, and a specialist degree in educational leadership from Arkansas State University, and was pursuing a doctorate in education, curriculum, and instruction at Delta State University.

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation continues.
