Authorities Investigate Deadly Shooting on I-73 South That Killed Lavon Bennett

Police confirmed that Greensboro officers are investigating a shooting that left one man dead and a woman injured early Sunday morning along Interstate 73 South.
According to the Greensboro Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 12:52 a.m. on Sunday, December 21, after receiving a report of a “man down” on I-73 South just before the West Wendover Avenue exit, also known as Exit 102.
When officers arrived at the scene, they located a vehicle occupied by two individuals who appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
The male victim was identified as Lavon Montreaz Bennett, 28.
Police said Bennett sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died.
A woman who was also inside the vehicle was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were determined to be non-life-threatening.
Authorities confirmed that both victims were found inside the same vehicle at the location where officers responded.
Investigators have not released information about the events that led up to the shooting and have not identified any suspects or a possible motive at this time.
The case remains under active investigation, and police stated that no additional details are currently available for public release.
Bennett’s death has been identified as the City of Greensboro’s 42nd homicide of 2025.
