Amanda Seyfried Says She Won’t Apologize After Calling Charlie Kirk ‘Hateful’

Amanda Seyfried isn’t backing down from her remarks.
In a recent interview with Who What Wear, the actress said she will not apologize for calling conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk “hateful” after his death in the September 10, 2025 shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Seyfried’s comments trace back to a social media moment in September, when she responded to an Instagram post about Kirk’s killing with a brief message: “He was hateful.” The remark sparked immediate backlash, and Seyfried later posted a clarification saying her words were being reshared without context and that she wanted to explain what she meant.
In the interview, Seyfried said she does not regret making the comment. While her original phrasing was blunt, she argued that her view was based on Kirk’s public record—statements, clips, and quotes that had circulated widely for years. She also emphasized that she believes she is allowed to hold and express an opinion, particularly when it is rooted in material that is already public.
At the same time, Seyfried stressed that condemning someone’s rhetoric is not the same as endorsing violence. In her follow-up Instagram clarification, she said she did not want to “add fuel to a fire,” and urged people to recognize basic human nuance—saying she can strongly oppose ideas she considers harmful while also viewing Kirk’s killing as disturbing and wrong.
Her post also broadened the focus beyond one individual, pointing to the wider reality of shootings and violent deaths in the United States and asking whether people can agree—regardless of politics—that no one should have to experience that level of violence.
Kirk’s death led to major public reaction across the political spectrum, and the case has continued to draw national attention as legal proceedings move forward. Reuters reported that Tyler Robinson has been charged in connection with the killing and that prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.
Other public figures also weighed in during the aftermath, including actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who spoke about disagreeing with Kirk’s views while still expressing sympathy and acknowledging the loss for his family.
