HAYS CISD, Chad Michael Watts has been identified as the teacher involved in a physical altercation that occurred during a student-led protest in the Hays Consolidated Independent School District (CISD), according to law enforcement and information circulating on social media.
The incident happened Monday afternoon as students from Moe and Gene Johnson High School participated in a walkout protest tied to ongoing demonstrations against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Similar student-led protests have taken place across dozens of Central Texas school districts in recent weeks, following reports that federal immigration agents planned to stage operations in nearby areas, including Buda.
According to a news release from the Buda Police Department, officers were notified around 1:30 p.m. that students were protesting along RM 967. During the event, police received reports of a verbal argument between a female juvenile on the sidewalk and an adult male inside a vehicle.
“The argument escalated into a physical altercation involving multiple people,” Buda Police stated. “Both primary parties involved were identified and the situation remains under investigation.”
Online, the adult male involved has been identified as Chad Michael Watts, a teacher in Hays CISD, with social media posts claiming he was wearing a MAGA hat at the time of the confrontation. Authorities have not officially confirmed details regarding clothing, political symbolism, or the specific roles played by those involved.
No arrests have been announced as of the time of reporting, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
Hays CISD has not yet released a public statement addressing the incident or Watts’ employment status.
