Atlanta Youth Sports Community Mourns Coach Shelly Hoddeson, SEC Gardens Owner

Atlanta Tribute: The Atlanta youth sports community is mourning the sudden passing of coach Shelly Hoddeson, remembered as a dedicated mentor whose impact reached from competitive soccer to local training programs.

Hoddeson built a multi-faceted life in Atlanta, working as a Property Care Manager with Plants Creative Landscapes and operating her own horticultural venture, SEC Gardens. She was also associated in the past with ABC Land Management. Friends and colleagues say she brought the same energy and care to her professional work that she showed in her coaching.

In youth soccer, Hoddeson was recognized for both achievement and leadership. As a player, she was part of the GSA 85 team coached by Ted Colburn, described in tributes as the first girls’ team from Georgia to win a national championship in 2001. She later competed at the University of South Carolina and the University of Georgia, experiences that helped shape her approach to discipline, teamwork, and encouragement.

Members of the Atlanta soccer community have shared condolences and memories, describing her as a coach who combined intensity with positivity. Families and parents have also expressed that her mentorship helped young athletes grow in confidence, not just performance, and that her influence extended beyond match days.

Friends have continued to post reflections on her character, with many emphasizing her generosity, bright presence, and the lasting memories she created within teams and among families. Community members have noted that coaches often become anchors in youth programs, shaping culture and creating safe, motivating environments for players, and that her absence will be deeply felt across multiple circles.

Service information has also been shared publicly. A Catholic funeral Mass is planned for December 9, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Brigid Catholic Church, with a Rosary service scheduled beforehand at 10:00 a.m. Attendees have been advised that the service is open to those who wish to pay respects.

As tributes continue, many in the community say they hope to support Hoddeson’s family, colleagues, and players in the days ahead. She is being remembered for a legacy rooted in excellence, kindness, and a steady commitment to helping young athletes thrive.
