Firefighters Respond to Significant Fire at Graystone Inn in Downtown Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Firefighters are actively responding to a significant structure fire at the historic Graystone Inn in downtown Wilmington, leading to road closures and a large emergency presence Wednesday afternoon.

Crews from the Wilmington Fire Department arrived shortly after 1:40 p.m., finding heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the building. Firefighters remain on scene working to contain the blaze and limit additional damage.

Police have temporarily closed portions of Market Street and Orange Street to ensure first responders have full access to the area and to maintain public safety.

No injuries have been reported, and officials say the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The Graystone Inn, a well-known landmark in Wilmington’s historic district, has been closed since mid-2023 due to a previous kitchen fire. Renovations and construction work have been ongoing during the closure, making this the second major fire incident involving the property in less than two years.

Fire officials have not given an estimated time for full containment, and a damage assessment will be conducted once conditions allow. Investigators are expected to begin examining the cause after the fire is fully under control.

The situation remains active, and additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
