SEVERNA PARK, Md. — The Severn School community is mourning the passing of Andrew Otero, a former mathematics teacher whose influence on students, colleagues, and the wider school community was lasting and deeply meaningful.

Originally from Bristol, Connecticut, Otero devoted his life to service, education, and mentorship. A first-generation military member, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2009 at the age of 17. During his five years of service, he was stationed in Washington, D.C., where he worked directly for the White House during the Obama administration, an experience that reflected his discipline, professionalism, and commitment to public service.

After completing his military service, Otero continued to build a path defined by perseverance and achievement. As a first-generation college graduate, he earned a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Towson University, establishing the foundation for a career rooted in intellectual curiosity and a passion for teaching. He later made his home in Dundalk, Maryland.

At Severn School, Otero was known as far more than a mathematics teacher. He taught some of the school’s most rigorous courses, including AP Computer Science Principles and AP Calculus AB, subjects he deeply enjoyed and delivered with clarity and enthusiasm. His classroom was recognized for its balance of high expectations and strong support, where students were encouraged to think critically while being valued as individuals.

Beyond academics, Otero played an important role in student leadership and mentorship. He served as Grade Dean for the Class of 2025, guiding students through pivotal years of their academic and personal development. He also advised United Spectrum, the school’s gender and sexuality alliance, as well as the Severn Service Society, which supports both the school and the greater Annapolis community. His commitment to inclusion and equity was further reflected in his role as Upper School DEIB Coordinator.

Otero’s contributions extended into athletics and institutional leadership. He served as Head Coach for Track & Field, mentoring student-athletes with dedication and care. In addition, he was a member of the school’s Steering Committee and co-chaired the finance element of Severn School’s accreditation process, helping shape the school’s long-term planning and sustainability.
