Tulare County Deputy Killed in Porterville Shooting: Suspect Identified as David Morales

PORTERVILLE, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of a deputy who was killed in the line of duty on Thursday morning after a routine eviction service escalated into a deadly and ongoing confrontation.
Sheriff Mike Boudreaux confirmed that the incident began at approximately 10:20 a.m. on April 9, 2026, in the area of Newcomb Street and Grand Avenue.

During the eviction process, 60-year-old David Morales allegedly opened fire on deputies at the scene.
One deputy was struck during the initial exchange of gunfire. Fellow officers carried out a tactical rescue under active threat conditions and transported the injured deputy to Sierra View Medical Center.
Despite emergency medical efforts, the deputy later died from his injuries.
Authorities said Morales remains at large and is believed to be barricaded inside the residence. He is reportedly armed with a high-powered rifle, and intermittent gunfire has continued, prompting a large-scale law enforcement response.
Multiple SWAT teams and specialized units have been deployed to contain the situation and clear nearby homes to ensure public safety.
Officials described the situation as highly dangerous and volatile.
As a precaution, residents in the surrounding area have been ordered to shelter in place. Several nearby schools, including Westfield Elementary School, Sequoia Middle School, and Monache High School, have been placed on lockdown, with students and staff secured inside buildings.
Authorities have urged parents not to attempt to pick up their children until further notice, stressing that safety protocols remain in effect.
Sheriff Boudreaux said he has met with the fallen deputy’s family and extended his condolences.
