In video from the encounter, the woman is heard asking employees why they would not serve them. She stated that refusing service because of the clothing was discriminatory. One employee responded that the refusal was related to views about the president referenced on the hoodie.

The couple then left the business, with the woman stating she intended to contact police regarding the situation.

Following the incident, Smoothie King confirmed that the two employees involved were terminated from their positions at the Ann Arbor location.

Separate from the store incident, records indicate that Jacob “Jake” Lindemyer, 33, has faced prior legal issues. Authorities reported that he was arrested on a warrant related to methamphetamine possession. Because of a prior 2008 Van Buren County drug conviction, prosecutors stated the maximum possible sentence could be increased to up to 20 years.

According to investigators, Michigan State Police troopers stopped Lindemyer on January 16 during an investigation involving suspected narcotics. Evidence collected during the investigation was sent to a state laboratory for testing, including items connected to suspected drug use.
