Riley McCracken Train Accident: Florida Communities Mourn Death in Fort Lauderdale and Tampa

FORT LAUDERDALE FLORIDA, Riley James McCracken has been identified by family members as the man who was killed in a tragic train accident in Fort Lauderdale over the weekend.
The fatal incident occurred early Sunday, March 8, when a train operated by Brightline struck a pedestrian walking along the railway tracks in the 700 block of North Andrews Avenue, roughly a mile north of the west end of Las Olas Boulevard.
According to authorities, the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. along the Florida East Coast Railway corridor that runs through the area. When crews from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, McCracken was pinned beneath the train. Emergency responders worked to lift the train and remove him from the tracks, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the crash temporarily disrupted train service along the line while authorities processed the scene.
The tragedy marked the second fatal train crash in South Florida within two days and the third train-related incident in three days. On Saturday, March 7, another crash in West Palm Beach left one person dead and another critically injured, while a separate incident in Delray Beach on Friday, March 6, injured a driver.
While officials have not released many details about the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s crash, McCracken’s family later confirmed his identity and shared an emotional tribute remembering his life.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share that my little brother, Riley James McCracken, passed away this weekend in a tragic and completely unexpected accident,” a family member wrote.
McCracken was the youngest of six brothers and was remembered as a fearless and energetic presence within his family.
“Riley was the youngest of six boys, our crazy baby brother who somehow managed to be everywhere at once and involved in everything,” the tribute continued. “From the time he was a kid, he was fearless — the kind of person who never hesitated to jump into whatever adventure was happening.”
Loved ones described him as outgoing and charismatic, someone who could walk into a room full of strangers and quickly leave with new friends. His kindness and humor left a lasting impression on those around him.
“To us, he was the family goofball — the kid brother who kept life interesting and made sure there was never a dull moment,” the family shared. “Our family is completely heartbroken. Riley was deeply loved, and he will be missed more than words can ever explain.”
In a poem written in his memory, his family remembered him as someone who lived boldly and brought laughter to those around him.
“You lived loud.
You loved big.
And every one of us is better for having known you.”
They closed their tribute with a heartfelt farewell: “Rest easy, Rydog. We love you forever.”
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family at a later time.
