BALTIMORE MARYLAND, A major police incident unfolded Sunday on Park Heights Avenue as officers responded to a rapidly escalating situation involving gunfire, an injured officer, and a reported hostage scenario.
According to emergency radio traffic from the Baltimore Police Department, a “Signal 13” officer-down alert was transmitted after shots were fired in the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue near the intersection with Pinkney Road.
The location is close to the Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue.
Initial reports indicated officers had been responding to a possible hostage situation when the encounter turned violent.
During the incident, two officers were reportedly pinned down, and one officer was struck by gunfire.
Authorities said the wounded officer sustained a gunshot wound to the leg but remained awake and conscious following the shooting.
Fellow officers transported the injured officer to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for treatment.
Radio communications indicated the suspect continued firing at responding officers, prompting the deployment of specialized tactical units.
A SWAT BearCat armored vehicle was dispatched to assist officers as they worked to contain the suspect and secure the area.
The situation later developed into a confirmed hostage scenario, with officers reporting that the suspect was holding a firearm to a female victim’s head.
Additional radio reports indicated the hostage was the suspect’s grandmother.
Authorities later reported that the hostage was safe, though details about how she was secured have not yet been officially confirmed.
During the standoff, police radio traffic indicated that a police sniper fired at the suspect, striking him and ending the immediate threat.
