Community Fund Created for 11-Year-Old South Coast Girl Killed in Tragic Accident

ROCHESTER MASSACHUSETTS, An 11-year-old South Coast girl who died in a tragic accident while on vacation is being remembered through a community fund established in her honor.
Madelyn “Maddie” Eitas of Rochester passed away following an avalanche incident near Brighton Ski Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah, according to reports.
Family members and bystanders immediately began search and rescue efforts after she was caught in the avalanche. Her brother, Cameron Eitas, helped locate her using a mobile application, assisting rescuers along the slide path. Madelyn was extracted, given first aid, and transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
In her obituary, Maddie was described as caring, athletic, adventurous, and a natural leader who brought people together wherever she went. Loved ones said she had a joyful spirit and was deeply devoted to her family, friends, and teammates.
To honor her memory, the family has created a community fund. Proceeds will support an annual Mariners soccer scholarship in her name, the addition of a scoreboard at Dexter Soccer Field with hopes for future field lighting, and initiatives promoting avalanche awareness and skiing safety.
Family members said their goal is to strengthen the community Maddie loved while creating lasting tributes to her energy, kindness, and adventurous spirit.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Century House, 107 S. Main Street in Acushnet. All who knew Madelyn are welcome to attend.
