St. Bernard Preparatory School Honors the Memory of Student Sarah Cumbie

The St. Bernard Preparatory School community is coming together in heartfelt remembrance following the loss of junior student Sarah Cumbie on November 20. Her classmates, teachers, and everyone who knew her are reflecting on the kindness, courage, and warmth she shared throughout her life.

Sarah became critically ill on November 16 and received care at local and regional medical facilities. Despite the dedicated efforts of those supporting her, she later passed while surrounded by those who cared for her. Her loss has deeply affected the school community, which is united in honoring her memory.

Arriving at St. Bernard in 7th grade, Sarah had already faced significant challenges early in life. After experiencing the loss of both parents within a short period, she found a home and family within the St. Bernard girls’ dormitory and later with teacher Dr. Craig Mann and his family. Their guidance and support shaped her school years and helped her grow with strength and resilience.

Sarah quickly became known for her thoughtful nature, generosity, and humility. Academically gifted, she recently achieved an ACT “super score” of 32 — earning her four years of tuition-free study at the University of Alabama, the school she dreamed of attending.

She also had a deep commitment to service. Through her work with Curt’s Closet, she contributed to meaningful efforts that supported children and families in need. Her dedication to giving back inspired many of her peers.

Even in her final moments, Sarah’s compassion made an impact. As an organ donor, her selfless decision has the potential to save several lives and bring hope to many others.

In response to her passing, St. Bernard Preparatory School has provided counseling resources, spiritual support, and opportunities for reflection. The school chapel remains open for those seeking comfort during this difficult time.

Headmaster Phuong Nguyen shared a message of unity and reflection, saying, “Sarah was dearly loved by all who knew her. We place our trust in God during this unimaginably difficult time and ask that her spirit, her courage, and her kindness continue to inspire us all.”

Sarah Cumbie’s legacy of perseverance, generosity, and love will continue to guide and uplift the St. Bernard community. Her memory remains a reminder of the meaningful impact one life can have on many others.
