San Diego Police Investigate Fatal Stabbing in Downtown Area

SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA, A man was fatally injured Saturday night in downtown San Diego, and a suspect was taken into custody shortly afterward following an incident at a nearby apartment, authorities said.
The San Diego Police Department responded around 9:23 p.m. to reports of a stabbing outside Hotel Churchill in the 800 block of C Street. Officers arriving at the scene found an unidentified man in his 40s on the sidewalk with multiple stab wounds, according to Homicide Lt. Lou Maggi.
Despite life-saving efforts by officers and paramedics, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
While officers were assisting the victim, they were directed to a suspect who had reportedly gone into a nearby apartment and attempted to start a fire inside. Officers forced entry into the unit and detained 34-year-old Grant Parker with the assistance of a police K9 unit. Parker was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation and is expected to be booked into county jail on suspicion of murder once medically cleared.
Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the relationship between the victim and Parker. The motive remains under investigation.
Because the scene was located near trolley tracks, trolley service in the area was temporarily suspended Saturday night but has since resumed.
Hotel Churchill is described as a residential apartment complex providing housing for low-income individuals, including formerly incarcerated or formerly homeless residents, as well as young adults transitioning out of foster care.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
