The Royal Canadian Mounted Police issued a police-initiated emergency alert Tuesday afternoon after reports of gunfire at the school. In a statement released around 1:20 p.m., RCMP said officers were responding to what they described as a confirmed active shooter incident at the campus.
Residents across Tumbler Ridge were instructed to shelter in place, lock their doors, and avoid leaving homes or businesses. Officials also urged the public to stay clear of the area and follow all police directions.
Initial information described the suspect as a person with brown hair wearing a dress. In a later update, authorities said the original suspect was believed to have been located deceased. Investigators are working to determine whether any additional suspects were involved and to confirm the total number of victims.
Police have not released an official breakdown of injuries or the condition of those hurt.
School District 59 confirmed that lockdown and “secure and hold” procedures were implemented at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School as a precaution.
BC Emergency Health Services said it was actively assisting at the scene. A spokesperson confirmed crews were working in coordination with Northern Health and the RCMP. STARS Air Ambulance also dispatched a team from Grande Prairie to support emergency response efforts.
The District of Tumbler Ridge issued a statement acknowledging the emotional impact on the small community, saying residents may be feeling shocked and overwhelmed. Officials thanked first responders and said additional support resources were being mobilized.
Additional RCMP units, including the North District Emergency Response Team, were deployed to assist with securing the area and gathering evidence. Authorities said the situation remains under investigation and urged residents not to approach the scene.
The emergency alert remains in effect as officials continue to assess the full scope of the incident. Police advised residents to remain sheltered, report suspicious activity, and monitor official updates as the investigation continues.
