Reg Johnstone of Bashaw Remembered After Sudden Death; Chuckwagon Community Mourns
BASHAW, ALBERTA — The town of Bashaw is mourning the loss of one of its most well-known and cherished residents, Reg “The Bashaw Flash” Johnstone, who passed away recently. A proud ambassador for his hometown and a respected member of the Western Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA), Johnstone leaves behind a lasting legacy in both his community and the sport of chuckwagon racing.
Reg Johnstone’s impact extended far beyond competition. While he was admired for his presence on the track, he was equally remembered for his personality, storytelling, and deep connections with friends, family, and fellow racers. Those who knew him say his influence was rooted as much in who he was as how he raced.
Close friend Kathy Anne shared a memory from Reg’s early days in chuckwagon racing, recalling how Reg and her father first hooked up a wagon team together just east of Bashaw. They borrowed horses from neighbors and used a few of their own. Once the team was ready, she remembered, Reg took the lines with enthusiasm and drove off with confidence. Kathy Anne described him as a colorful and unforgettable figure, adding that she holds many fond memories of him.
Johnstone was widely known not only for his competitive spirit but also for the energy and passion he brought to everything he did. Friends and colleagues say his love for chuckwagon racing and for life itself was evident in every interaction. His larger-than-life personality made him a source of inspiration and joy within the Bashaw community and beyond.
Another close friend, Wade Butchh Stewart, shared a tribute honoring Johnstone’s life. He said Reg passed away surrounded by family in Lethbridge, Alberta, and invited community members to a celebration of life to be held at the Bashaw Community Centre on Saturday, January 24, at 1 p.m. Stewart encouraged those attending to bring stories and memories, noting that sharing experiences would help everyone heal, with time for both laughter and reflection.
Reg Johnstone’s contributions to the WPCA and the wider chuckwagon racing community were significant. Known as “The Bashaw Flash,” he earned recognition for his speed, skill, and determination on the track, while off the track he was admired for his approachability, humor, and generosity. Through his involvement in the sport, he helped bring recognition and pride to Bashaw, a town closely associated with his name.
The Town of Bashaw has extended its deepest condolences to Johnstone’s family and friends. Community members say he was more than a local figure—he was someone whose presence shaped the spirit of the town.
