Minneapolis, Minnesota: Renee Macklin Good Identified After Death During ICE Operation

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA — Authorities are investigating the death of Renee Macklin Good, 37, a U.S. citizen, who died after being shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an immigration-related operation in south Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. The incident has led to conflicting accounts from federal officials and local and state leaders regarding the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the ICE agent discharged his weapon in self-defense, alleging that Good attempted to use her vehicle in a manner that posed a threat to officers involved in the operation. A DHS spokesperson described the gunfire as defensive in nature, saying the agent acted to protect himself and others at the scene.
Local leaders have challenged that explanation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said he reviewed video footage of the incident and rejected the federal government’s characterization of events. He called for an independent investigation and urged ICE to suspend operations within the city, stating that the situation escalated quickly and that the continued presence of federal agents after the shooting interfered with emergency response efforts.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the state would pursue a “full, fair, and expeditious investigation” to determine what occurred and to establish accountability. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota also raised concerns, saying the federal account does not appear to align with available video evidence and reports from individuals present at the scene.
Minneapolis police said Good did not appear to be the intended subject of any law enforcement action. Witnesses reported a tense situation on Portland Avenue, where a vehicle was stopped during activity linked to the operation. Video shared on social media shows agents approaching a burgundy SUV and instructing the driver to exit the vehicle. Shortly afterward, gunshots were heard, and the vehicle came to a stop after striking nearby objects. Authorities said Good was taken for medical treatment but later died from her injuries.
Friends and community members described Good as a poet and writer, a wife and mother, and a longtime resident of Colorado who had been living in Minneapolis. Advocacy groups said she may have been acting as a legal observer during community activity related to federal enforcement actions, though authorities have not confirmed that claim.
Civil rights and community organizations criticized the shooting and called for transparency and accountability. The American Humanist Association said differing narratives have emerged and urged an independent and thorough review of the incident.
ICE agents were conducting targeted operations in Minneapolis at the time of the shooting. The agent involved has not been publicly identified. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and that additional details will be released as more information becomes available.
