Jefferson Voelker of Princeton University Dies in Boiceville, New York

JEFFERSON VOELKER, Princeton University and communities in New Jersey and New York are mourning the death of a sophomore who died while on leave from the University, according to an email sent to the campus community on Tuesday. The University did not disclose the date or cause of death.
Voelker, Class of 2028, was from Boiceville, New York, and was a member of New College West. University records indicate he is the third Princeton student or postdoctoral researcher to die during the current academic year, and the 13th over the past five years.
In a message to students, faculty, and staff, Dean of Undergraduate Students Regan Crotty ’00 shared condolences on behalf of the University.
“We know that every member of our community joins us in sending condolences to Jefferson’s family and friends and in wishing them strength,” Crotty wrote.
Voelker maintained a limited public digital presence, though he was listed as a member of the Princeton Garden Theatre honor roll. The University did not state how long he had been on leave or the reason for it. Princeton officials noted that students may take leave for a variety of reasons, including health concerns, family needs, travel, professional or volunteer opportunities, or to reassess academic goals.
An opportunity for students to gather and reflect in remembrance of Voelker’s life is scheduled for Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the home of New College West Head AnneMarie Luijendijk in José E. Feliciano Hall.
In her message, Crotty encouraged members of the community to seek support and connection during this difficult time.
“During difficult times like these, we encourage you to reach out to one another for connection and consolation, and to call on University resources when you need support,” she wrote.
Students in need of counseling services were encouraged to contact Princeton University Counseling and Psychological Services at 609-258-3141. Faculty and staff were reminded that confidential support is available through AllOneHealth at 800-451-1834. Additional mental health and wellness resources are available through the University’s TigerLife website.
As the Princeton community continues to grieve, many are remembering Jefferson Voelker as a valued member of New College West whose loss is being felt deeply across campus and beyond.
