Fatal Shooting in Onehunga Prompts Heavy Police Response in Central Auckland

ONEHUNGA, Auckland One person has died following a shooting in the central Auckland suburb of Onehunga late this morning, prompting a large emergency response and an ongoing police investigation.
Emergency services were called to an incident in the Arthur Street area at around 11 a.m. Police confirmed a heavy presence at the scene, with sections of Arthur Street and nearby Alfred Street cordoned off while officers secured the area. The police Eagle helicopter was also observed circling overhead for a period before later departing.
St John Ambulance responded with an ambulance, a rapid response unit, and an operations manager. Paramedics located one patient in critical condition and transported them to Auckland City Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Despite efforts by emergency medical staff, the victim later died from their injuries.
Police have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether any suspects are in custody or whether the incident poses an ongoing risk to the public. Authorities said inquiries remain ongoing.
