Decorated Marine Killed in Facebook Marketplace Robbery, Investigation Underway

MICHAEL RYAN BURKE, A decorated U.S. Marine veteran was fatally shot during a Facebook Marketplace robbery at his Columbia, Minnesota home, sending a final heartbreaking text message to his family before his death.

Authorities said Michael Ryan Burke, 42, was killed during a Facebook Marketplace sale that turned violent over the weekend. According to police, Burke had arranged to sell an iPhone through the online platform when a group of four individuals came to his residence. Instead of completing the transaction, investigators say the suspects entered the home, shot Burke, and stole his phone.

Family members told investigators that Burke managed to call 911 and describe the suspects before sending text messages to his mother and sister saying, “Hey I’m dying and I love you,” according to reports. He was later transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Court documents state the shooting occurred Sunday during a planned sale involving an iPhone 15 Pro valued at approximately $585. Police said three teens and one juvenile were involved in the robbery and shooting, taking the phone immediately after the attack.

In a statement released on Jan. 20, the Columbia Police Department confirmed the arrests of one woman, two men, and a male juvenile in connection with the robbery and murder that occurred in the 1400 block of Ridgemont Court.

Police identified the adult suspects as Alexis Baumann, 18, of Hallsville; Kobe Aust, 18, of Columbia; and Joseph Crane, 18, of Columbia. A male juvenile was also taken into custody. Authorities said all four face charges including second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, first-degree burglary, and additional weapons-related offenses. They are being held without bond.

Friends and community members described Burke as a devoted Marine, missionary, and mentor. One individual, Tyler Woodsome, shared that Burke had helped encourage him to remain sober and spoke of Burke’s impact as a humanitarian and man of faith.

Investigators allege the group was involved in multiple robberies in the hours leading up to the fatal shooting, targeting other victims for their phones. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to review evidence related to the case.
