Bessemer Parking Lot Shooting Leaves Amazon Employee Dead, Suspect at Large

BESSEMER, ALABAMA, — An Amazon warehouse employee was shot and killed outside a fulfillment center in Bessemer while on break Sunday night, and no arrests have been made, authorities said.
Tyler Neil Alexander, 19, of Birmingham, Alabama, was on break at the Amazon Fulfillment Center when he was struck by a barrage of bullets in the facility’s parking lot. Police said the shooting occurred around 10:40 p.m. outside the Powder Plant Road location, according to AL.com.
The Amazon employee, who had worked at the facility for less than a month, was found dead on the pavement after the gunfire stopped.
Bessemer Police Detective Justin Burmeister said it was not immediately clear whether the shooter or shooters were current or former Amazon employees. Investigators also have not determined whether Alexander was specifically targeted or randomly shot.
As of now, authorities have not announced any suspects or made any arrests in the case.
Investigators placed at least 10 evidence markers throughout the parking lot during the initial investigation. Amazon canceled the remainder of the night shift and Monday’s day shift, sending employees home with pay.
Alexander’s mother, Sophie Brown, said her son had been employed at the facility for just 20 days and that he loved his job. She said Alexander graduated from Huffman High School in 2025.
Brown said she is determined to find out who killed her son and questioned how the shooter or shooters were able to access the Amazon property. She noted that while the facility has security measures inside, stronger security is needed in the parking lot.
The shooting has raised concerns among employees about safety and security at the fulfillment center. One worker, who asked not to be identified, told WVTM 13 that they feared returning to work and said there was not enough security for the area where the facility is located.
The employee said access to the property often requires only an employee badge, which may still be retained after termination, and noted frequent car break-ins in the area. The worker urged Amazon to implement stronger security measures and provide additional support for employees following the incident.
In a statement to WVTM 13, Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson said the company was deeply saddened by the violent incident and is focused on supporting employees while cooperating with the Bessemer Police Department in the ongoing investigation.
Brown said her family is devastated by the loss and called for justice for her son.
