Benjamin Cowart and Jalen Pina Killed in Shooting at Birthday Party in Carver

CARVER MASSACHUSETTS, a suspect is in custody following a fatal shooting at a child’s birthday party Saturday evening that left two people dead and two others injured, according to authorities.

Police said officers were dispatched around 7:22 p.m. to the Saint John the Baptist Club, an event venue on Silva Street, after reports of gunfire were received.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said officers arriving at the scene found four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Benjamin Cowart, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jalen Pina, 20, was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth, where he later died from his injuries.

Two other victims were also transported to area hospitals.

A 28-year-old man was taken to Tufts Medical Center with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while a 32-year-old man was transported to South Shore Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not released updates on their conditions.

District Attorney Cruz said the suspect fled the scene following the shooting but was later located and taken into custody by the Carver Police Department.

The suspect was identified as Nicholas Meuse, 23.

Authorities said Meuse faces two counts of murder, two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, and several firearms-related charges.

He is expected to be arraigned in Wareham District Court.

The Carver Police Department said there is no ongoing threat to the public and indicated the incident does not appear to have been random.

The investigation remains active and is being led by the Massachusetts State Police in coordination with Carver police. Officials said additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
