Arizona Athletic Grounds Stabbing Leaves One Injured During Football Tournament in Mesa

MESA AZ, A youth football tournament at the Arizona Athletic Grounds was abruptly canceled Sunday afternoon, January 18, after a violent altercation resulted in at least one person being stabbed.
Mesa police and multiple emergency units responded to the scene along South Ellsworth Road shortly after 4 p.m. following numerous reports of a large brawl and a possible stabbing. The incident happened during an 18U football game and caused alarm among players, coaches, families, and spectators at the venue.
When first responders arrived, they found at least one individual suffering from injuries consistent with a knife wound. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Authorities have not released information about the person’s condition.
Witnesses said the disturbance began as a fight connected to a 7-on-7 football game and escalated quickly. Early reports from the scene suggested a possible shooting, but officials later clarified that the injuries appeared to be the result of a stabbing rather than gunfire.
Law enforcement officers worked to secure the area and disperse the crowd while emergency personnel provided medical assistance. Out of concern for public safety, tournament organizers decided to cancel all remaining games scheduled for the day.
Officials have not confirmed any additional injuries, and it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made. Authorities have not released further details about those involved or what led to the altercation.
