STEWARTVILLE authorities are continuing to investigate a tragic shooting outside Stewartville High School that left a teenage student-athlete critically injured and resulted in the death of former assistant wrestling coach Logan Moyer from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 5:00 a.m. Friday reporting a shooting in the parking lot of Stewartville High School, located around 10 miles south of Rochester.

Deputies arrived to find two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victim was identified as a teenage male student-athlete who was shot while walking toward a bus preparing to transport roughly 40 coaches and student-athletes to a wrestling tournament.

He was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and remains in critical condition, authorities confirmed.

Nearby, deputies found an adult male deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A rifle was recovered at the scene.

Law enforcement identified the deceased as Logan Moyer, a former assistant wrestling coach for the school district.

Sheriff Kevin Torgerson stated that early findings indicate Moyer had previously been terminated from his coaching role. Investigators are now working to determine the nature of his relationship with the victim and the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Officials stressed that the motive remains under investigation and urged the community to avoid speculation while the case unfolds.

Multiple reports indicate Moyer arrived at the school early in the morning as the wrestling team was loading buses. After the student was shot, other coaches reportedly attempted to intervene.

A short time later, a second gunshot was heard, which investigators believe was the moment Moyer took his own life.

Following the incident, students were reunited with their families. Classes were canceled for the day at both Stewartville High School and Stewartville Middle School.

The district also announced the cancellation of a scheduled Friday night basketball game against Lourdes.

“This incident has impacted far more than just the individuals involved,” Sheriff Torgerson said during a press briefing, becoming visibly emotional. “We ask the community to come together and support those who have been affected.”

Stewartville Superintendent Belinda Selfors said the district has activated counseling and mental health resources for students, staff, and families. These services will remain available throughout the weekend and into the following week.

“This is an incredibly difficult day for our community,” Selfors said. “In times like these, it is important that we come together to support one another. We also ask for patience and compassion as the investigation continues.”

Authorities confirmed that the investigation remains active, including an ongoing review of the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Law enforcement reiterated that no additional threat exists to the community at this time.
