Memphis Soul icon Steve Cropper—celebrated guitarist, songwriter, and producer—died in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at the age of 84, according to multiple reports.

While an official cause of death was not publicly disclosed in initial reporting, coverage noted he had recently suffered a fall and had been in a rehabilitation facility before his death.

Cropper’s passing closes a major chapter in American music history. He was widely recognized for a clean, economical guitar style—tight rhythm, sharp chord stabs, and melodic phrasing—that became a defining ingredient of the Memphis soul sound. As a key figure at Stax Records and a core member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, he helped shape recordings that remain central to soul, R&B, and rock’s shared DNA.

As a founding member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s, Cropper was part of the group behind “Green Onions,” one of the era’s most enduring instrumentals. Beyond their own hits, Booker T. & the M.G.’s also became essential as Stax’s house band, backing and supporting sessions that defined an entire label’s sound and helped elevate a long list of classic artists.

Cropper’s impact extended far beyond performance. He was also a major songwriter, credited with co-writing some of the best-known songs in modern popular music, including “(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay,” “In the Midnight Hour,” and “Knock on Wood.” These tracks have remained cultural touchstones for decades, recorded and reinterpreted across generations and genres.

Later, he reached new audiences through his work with the Blues Brothers, where his musicianship helped bridge classic soul and blues traditions with mainstream pop culture. That era reinforced what fellow musicians already knew: Cropper could serve the song with restraint and personality at the same time, whether in a Memphis studio or on a big stage.

Across his career, Cropper received major recognition for both artistry and influence. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Booker T. & the M.G.’s and later honored by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, reflecting the rare combination of elite instrumental work and classic songwriting that defined his legacy.

In tributes following the news, many accounts highlighted how deeply his work is woven into the sound of Southern soul—music built on feel, timing, and understatement rather than flash. That approach made Cropper a guiding reference point for countless guitarists, producers, and bandleaders who came after him.

Cropper is survived by his wife, Angel, and four children, according to reporting.
