One Killed, Sheriff Injured in Shooting at Shoshone County Courthouse in Wallace, Idaho

Active shooter reports prompted a massive multi-agency law enforcement response Friday after gunfire erupted at the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office and Courthouse in Wallace, Idaho, authorities confirmed.
WALLACE, Idaho — According to early reports, the incident occurred near the Shoshone County Public Safety Facility, which houses both the sheriff’s office and the courthouse. One person was reported dead, and a Shoshone County sheriff’s deputy was injured during the incident. The injured deputy was transported for medical treatment, though officials have not disclosed the extent of the injuries.
Additional gunfire was reported at an Ace Hardware store located across the street from the sheriff’s office. The store’s owner confirmed that shots were fired into the building. Employees were immediately placed on lockdown and sheltered in the store’s basement as a precaution.
The Mineral County Sheriff’s Office confirmed reports of an active shooter at the Shoshone County Courthouse and announced that additional resources were being deployed to assist. Authorities urged residents and visitors to avoid the downtown Wallace area while the situation remained active.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Idaho State Police, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, and other neighboring law enforcement departments. Witnesses reported a heavy police presence, with emergency vehicles and flashing lights surrounding government buildings in the area.
Officials indicated that both the jail and courthouse were considered active targets during the response. As of Friday evening, authorities had not confirmed whether a suspect was in custody or if the threat had been fully neutralized.
The incident occurred amid recent scrutiny of the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, which had previously been under FBI investigation following the resignation of former Sheriff Holly Lindsay earlier this year. Authorities emphasized that the prior investigation is unrelated to Friday’s shooting.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the incident and have not released the identities of those involved. Residents are advised to monitor official updates and remain clear of the area as the investigation continues.
This remains a developing story, and updates will be provided as more verified information becomes available.
