Muskingum University and the North Ridgeville community are mourning the sudden loss of Jeremy Michael, a sophomore student and member of the Muskingum Fighting Muskies football team, who died after collapsing while playing basketball with friends on campus.

University officials said Jeremy, a defensive lineman and two-year member of the football program, experienced a medical emergency during a recreational basketball game. Despite immediate help, he did not survive. Those who knew him said he was recognized across campus for his commitment to athletics, involvement in student life, and the kindness he showed to others.

In a statement, Muskingum University expressed deep sadness over the loss and extended condolences to his loved ones. The university described Jeremy as a two-year member of the football team, a brother in MACE, and a student assistant in Sports Communication, adding that his presence impacted many throughout the campus community.

Jeremy was a graduate of North Ridgeville High School (Class of ’24). The North Ridgeville Rangers Football Program also issued a tribute, calling him a gifted athlete and remembering the impact he made on people both on and off the field. The program said it was devastated by the loss and shared condolences with Jeremy’s family, friends, and the Muskingum University football program.

Friends and classmates remembered Jeremy as kind, fun, and passionate about sports. They said he loved football and basketball and valued time spent with a close group of friends he had known since grade school. Those close to him described him as positive, loyal, and a natural leader.

The Muskingum Fighting Muskies community echoed those reflections, noting that Jeremy’s energy and dedication left a lasting impression on teammates, students, and staff. As the university and the North Ridgeville community continue to grieve, tributes are continuing to come in from classmates, coaches, and former teammates honoring his life and the influence he had on others.

Funeral arrangements and memorial details are expected to be shared by the family in the coming days.
