Brown University Update: Video Shows Suspect Leaving Engineering Building After Campus Shooting Incident

Authorities have confirmed that the deadly shooting at Brown University took place inside a first-floor classroom in the Barus and Holley Engineering Building. Investigators believe all 11 victims were students.
Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining victims were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
A later update revealed that an additional victim suffered injuries from bullet fragments and is expected to make a full recovery.
Providence Police stated that the suspect fled the building immediately after the incident, exiting onto Hope Street before heading toward the Waterman Street area.
More than six hours after the shooting, the suspect remained at large.
Officials confirmed that there is no interior surveillance footage capturing the shooter inside the Barus and Holley building.
Authorities have also been unable to determine how the suspect initially entered the building or precisely where he went after escaping the area.
Police described the suspect as a male, possibly in his 30s, and dressed in black clothing.
Investigators are also reviewing video that may show the suspect wearing a camouflage-style face covering, though that detail has not yet been confirmed.
The incident began shortly after 4:20 p.m., when Brown University issued an emergency alert warning of an active shooter near the Barus and Holley Engineering Building.
Students, faculty, staff, and nearby residents were instructed to shelter in place, secure doors, silence mobile devices, and remain hidden until given further instructions.
The alert highlighted standard emergency guidance: evacuate if safe, hide if evacuation was not possible, and engage in defensive action only as a last resort.
Around 5:27 p.m., the university issued a follow-up alert reporting additional shots fired near Governor Street, roughly two blocks from the initial location.
Minutes later, the Providence Police Department confirmed that multiple individuals had been shot in the vicinity of the campus.
During an evening press conference, Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara stated that investigators believe a firearm was used in the attack. However, no weapon has been recovered, and the type of firearm remains unknown.
Police confirmed that there was no direct interaction between officers and the suspect, who fled on foot before law enforcement arrived.
Authorities addressed reports of a separate police confrontation involving gunfire several blocks away.
Officials clarified that, although early reports suggested a suspect might have been detained, investigators have not established any confirmed connection between that encounter and the Brown University shooting.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that no suspect is in custody. He stated that Brown University officials, local law enforcement, and the FBI are working closely together to locate the individual responsible.
The Barus and Holley Engineering Building, constructed in 1965, includes classrooms, laboratories, offices, and lecture halls for engineering and physics programs. It was occupied at the time due to scheduled examinations.
As of the most recent update, the shelter-in-place order remained active.
Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing.
Officials have not released identifying details about the victims out of respect for families and due to the active nature of the case.
