Brown University shooting suspect found dead inside Extra Space Storage Facility in Salem
SALEM, N.H. — The individual suspected in the Brown University shooting and the killing of Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno F. G. According to people who are familiar with the investigation, Loureiro’s body was discovered in a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire. Authorities believe the individual died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Suspect was not a US citizen but instead a legal permanent resident. According to sources from law enforcement, the suspect had a storage unit registered in his name at the same facility where an investigation-related abandoned vehicle was previously discovered. Investigators had not entered the unit prior to the discovery. The suspect is reportedly seen entering the storage complex on surveillance footage; however, it is still unknown whether he left before his death. Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies worked closely together on the investigation, particularly in the vicinity of the Salem, New Hampshire–Methuen, Massachusetts border. Earlier, Methuen police issued a public advisory requesting that residents report any individuals on foot who appeared out of place or were behaving suspiciously. Authorities emphasized at the time that there was no known threat to the public.
The suspect used a vehicle connected to both the Brown University shooting and the MIT professor’s death, according to the investigation. Officials briefed on the case said that despite having different license plates, the vehicle in both investigations was the same make and model. In the Brown University case, a witness provided the license plate number, which allowed authorities to trace the vehicle’s history and ultimately link it to the Brookline homicide. Law enforcement later located the vehicle in Salem after a license plate reader flagged one of the associated plates, prompting a significant police presence in the area.
Officials said the suspect appeared to have employed multiple countermeasures to avoid detection, including switching license plates across jurisdictions and taking steps to limit identification through surveillance cameras and facial recognition technology.
The actions drew comparisons to other high-profile manhunts in which suspects attempted to conceal their identities while evading capture, according to the authorities. Officials have not yet revealed the identity of the suspect or any additional information due to formal confirmation and notification procedures. The investigation is still ongoing.
