Authorities Investigate Sacramento Case Involving Former Deputy and Family Tragedy; Officer-Involved Shooting Reported

Authorities Investigating: A multi-county incident in Northern California ended Tuesday after a suspect connected to a reported domestic homicide was shot by law enforcement during a freeway confrontation and later died at a hospital, according to authorities.
Police said the case began around 8 a.m. when Elk Grove officers responded to a welfare concern at a home in the 7600 block of Ferrell Way, near Whitelock Parkway and Bruceville Road. Inside, officers found an 11-year-old child with life-threatening injuries; the child was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead, officials said. A second child, age 6, was found unharmed.
Authorities identified the suspect as 40-year-old Marvin Morales, who they said left the scene before officers arrived. Police also stated that Morales previously worked as a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy and had been the subject of public reporting related to an internal matter in 2023.
Investigators said Morales was later located driving on Interstate 5 near Pocket Road, and a pursuit followed southbound into San Joaquin County. The pursuit ended on I-5 south of Highway 12 as multiple agencies responded, including the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, Elk Grove Police Department, and the California Highway Patrol.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office reported an officer-involved shooting occurred during the confrontation, and Elk Grove police said one of its officers was also involved. Officials later confirmed Morales died at the hospital.
The incident prompted a significant law-enforcement response and temporarily impacted traffic on Interstate 5. Caltrans reported closures in the area during the investigation, while CHP assisted with traffic control.
Elk Grove police said they are leading the investigation, and the officer-involved shooting will be reviewed under standard procedures. Authorities have not released additional verified details about what led up to the violence, and updates are expected as the investigation continues.
