TPD: Authorities Release Identity in Ongoing Roadway Incident Investigation

TAMPA – The Tampa Police Department has released the identity of the individual involved in a recent roadway incident, identifying him as 41-year-old Dedrick Sykes. Officers responded Friday evening to the area of E 5th Ave. and N 22nd St. after receiving reports of an altercation that resulted in serious injuries.
According to officials, officers found Sykes at the scene and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away. Detectives say the situation began as a verbal dispute between an adult male and Sykes shortly before the incident escalated. The individual involved remained at the scene and spoke with investigators, stating that he acted in self-defense. Authorities noted that he showed no signs of impairment.
Sykes, known in the Tampa Bay area as DJ ShyGuy, was recognized for his work as a local DJ and for his involvement in the music community. News of his passing has prompted messages of sympathy from those who knew him personally and professionally.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene and confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Detectives are actively reviewing all available evidence and are working with the State Attorney’s Office as part of the investigative process.
