Second Person Charged in Randolph County Child’s Accidental Shooting Death Case

RANDOLPH COUNTY, A second individual has been charged in connection with the death of a child following an accidental shooting that occurred in January 2026.
According to prosecutors, Michael S. Timmons was charged on March 26, 2026, with five counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, creating a substantial risk.
The incident took place on January 18, 2026, when emergency responders were called to a residence after reports of a child suffering from a gunshot wound.
Court records indicate that five children, ranging in age from 7 to 12, were inside the home at the time while their mother, Jo M. Timmons, 37, had left to pick up her paycheck.
The children told investigators they noticed an unknown vehicle approaching the driveway. After contacting their mother, they went into a bedroom to hide. During that time, one of the children retrieved a firearm from a dresser.
The weapon discharged, striking an 11-year-old child, who later died from the injury.
Authorities reported locating a .380 Bersa handgun in a drawer at the residence.
Investigators also noted concerning living conditions inside the home, including a strong odor and signs of infestation.
Officials stated that Michael Timmons was in North Carolina at the time of the incident. However, court documents indicate that the children said the home was in a similar condition when he was present.
The case remains under investigation as legal proceedings continue.
