TUMBLER RIDGE, authorities in northeastern British Columbia are responding to a confirmed active shooter incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, prompting a public safety alert and a significant law enforcement presence in the community.

As of 1:20 p.m., the Tumbler Ridge RCMP confirmed officers were actively on scene and directed residents to shelter in place. Community members were instructed to lock their doors, remain inside homes or businesses, and avoid unnecessary travel until further notice. Those outside the immediate area were urged to stay clear and follow all police directions and road restrictions.

The emergency response followed a Police-Initiated Public Alert issued through Canada’s Emergency Alert System after reports of an active shooter. The alert applies to Tumbler Ridge and surrounding areas within the RCMP-designated radius.

Authorities initially described the suspect as a person with brown hair wearing a dress, noting that the description was preliminary and subject to change as the investigation progressed.

Police later stated that the original suspect is believed to have been located deceased. Investigators continue to determine whether any additional individuals may have been involved and to establish the total number of victims connected to the incident.

At the time of the update, officials had not confirmed the number of people injured or whether anyone required medical treatment.
