SOUTH OMAHA, Neb. — The South Omaha community is mourning the passing of 17-year-old Sevyn Bellar-White, who died following a shooting that occurred near 36th and Polk Streets during the late hours of October 31. Police responded just before midnight after receiving reports of gunfire at a gathering in the area. When officers arrived, they located Bellar-White with critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away.

According to the Omaha Police Department, multiple individuals were present at a house gathering when the incident took place. Officers worked through the night reviewing evidence from the scene and speaking with witnesses who were in the area at the time. As part of their investigation, detectives examined available surveillance footage and collected information that led to the identification of potential suspects.

By Wednesday, authorities had taken 18-year-olds Rayquan Bass and Yourhansay Gonzales-Washington into custody in Council Bluffs. Police report that Bass faces charges including second-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and possession of a defaced firearm. Gonzales-Washington faces charges of possession of a defaced firearm, tampering with evidence, and accessory to a felony. Officials state that the investigation remains active as they continue to review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Bellar-White was a student at Millard North High School, where he was known for his positive nature and strong connections with classmates and teachers. School administrators described him as a student who contributed meaningfully to the school community and was well liked by peers. Friends and teachers noted his sense of humor, supportive personality, and enthusiasm for his plans after graduation.

Following news of his passing, students and community members gathered for vigils, sharing memories and expressing support for Bellar-White’s family. Social media posts from friends, classmates, and teachers reflected the widespread impact he had on those around him.

As investigators continue to gather information, authorities are encouraging anyone with additional details to contact the Omaha Police Department or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
