ENID OKLAHOMA, A first-grade school teacher in Enid, Oklahoma was shot and killed by her estranged husband, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
Kendra Diane Smith, a 53-year-old first-grade teacher at Coolidge Elementary, was reportedly shot multiple times at her residence by her estranged husband, 56-year-old Jeffrey Len Smith of Oklahoma City. Authorities later found him dead inside his vehicle at a nearby gas station.
Police said officers responded around 7:50 p.m. on March 4 to reports of gunfire near 23rd Street and Cedar Avenue. Neighbors reported hearing several gunshots near Kendra Smith’s home and taking cover as the situation unfolded.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead from her injuries.
During the investigation, officers identified a possible suspect as the victim’s estranged husband. Authorities later located the suspect at a Love’s Travel Stop, where he was found deceased in his vehicle from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident occurred less than two miles from the school where Smith taught. News of the tragedy prompted a response from school officials, who described Smith as a valued member of their school community who cared deeply for her students.
Enid Public Schools said counselors would be made available for students and staff and described the loss as devastating for the district.
A family friend described Smith, who was named Teacher of the Year in 2021, as a kind and caring person who had a strong impact on those around her.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue working to determine what led to the apparent murder-suicide.
A GoFundMe campaign has also been organized to support Smith’s family. She is survived by three children and two grandchildren.
