Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, has been arrested and formally charged in connection with the deaths of his parents, authorities confirmed Monday.
Reiner is currently being held in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department on $4 million bail, according to booking records.
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found deceased Sunday afternoon inside their Brentwood home on Chadbourne Avenue. Responding officers and paramedics pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
Law enforcement officials said the couple suffered fatal injuries consistent with sharp-force trauma. The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division has taken over the investigation.
Police were dispatched to the residence shortly after 3:30 p.m. following a report initially described as an “ambulance death investigation.” One of the couple’s daughters reportedly discovered the bodies and contacted authorities.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether a domestic dispute or altercation preceded the violence. Officials have not publicly disclosed a motive, citing the ongoing nature of the case.
Nick Reiner was taken into custody and booked at an LAPD facility. Court records list him as charged with murder, though prosecutors have not yet released detailed information regarding the evidence supporting the charges.
The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner have sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues and admirers. Longtime friends and collaborators, including Billy Crystal and Larry David, were seen at the residence Sunday evening.
Public tributes have also been shared by prominent figures such as former President Barack Obama, author Stephen King, and actor Ben Stiller.
Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, earning two Primetime Emmy Awards. He later became one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, with a career spanning decades and including films such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, and The Bucket List. In recent years, he also appeared in television series including New Girl and The Bear.
Rob and Michele Reiner married in 1989 and shared more than 35 years together. They are survived by their children Jake, Nick, and Romy, as well as Rob Reiner’s daughter Tracy from his previous marriage to director Penny Marshall.
Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid speculation as the investigation moves forward. Further updates are expected as the case proceeds through the court system.
