Police Investigate Two-Vehicle Crash Near Thruway Exit 24 in Albany; One Dead, Several Hospitalized

State Police Investigate a two-vehicle crash on the New York State Thruway near Exit 24 in Albany that left one driver dead and eight others hospitalized Monday evening, according to officials.
Authorities said the collision occurred around 6:45 p.m. during a merge onto the Thruway. Preliminary findings indicate that a vehicle entering the highway merged into the path of an oncoming vehicle, leading to a serious impact and the temporary closure of part of the roadway.
Police reported that five people—two adults and three minors—were in the vehicle that was entering the Thruway. The driver was transported to Albany Medical Center with critical injuries and later died. The passengers in that vehicle, along with four adults in the second vehicle, were also taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Troopers from Troop T and investigators from Troop G’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation remained on scene for several hours while traffic was diverted off Exit 24 and crews cleared debris. By about 9:30 p.m., State Police said traffic began to resume, though the investigation remains active.
The victim’s name has not been released, pending notification of family members. Investigators are continuing to review available evidence, including witness statements and roadway information, and additional updates are expected as details are confirmed.
The Thruway corridor near Exit 24 is one of the busier sections of the Capital Region, particularly during the evening commute. Safety discussions often highlight on-ramp merging as a recurring risk area, emphasizing the importance of caution, space management, and awareness during lane-entry situations.
Community members have shared condolences and support for those involved, particularly given that minors were among the injured. Officials continue to encourage drivers to remain attentive in high-traffic merging zones to help reduce the risk of similar incidents.
