Teen Identified as Namar Hicks Killed in Milwaukee Shooting Near Assata High School

An 18-year-old student identified by family members as Namar Hicks was fatally shot Friday morning just a few blocks from Assata High School in Milwaukee, leading to widespread concern among school officials, parents, and community leaders.
The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m., shortly after Hicks was released early from school. According to the Milwaukee Police Department, Hicks was confronted near Hopkins Street and Glendale Avenue by individuals attempting to rob him. During the encounter, shots were fired, striking both Hicks and one of the suspects.
Despite being gravely wounded, Hicks managed to make his way back to the school to seek help. Staff immediately contacted 911 and initiated a full lockdown, securing entry points and turning off lights while awaiting law enforcement.
Hicks was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later passed away from his injuries.
Police later confirmed that a 17-year-old suspect was also injured during the robbery attempt. That teen was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and taken into custody. Authorities say additional suspects remain at large, and the investigation is ongoing.
Notably, the shooting happened just minutes after Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman and violence prevention advocates from 414Life participated in a youth-centered event addressing the ongoing rise in gun violence.
Chief Norman condemned the incident, stating:
“There is no place for firearms in our youth’s hands. None. We are seeing this situation play out over and over again. We all have a responsibility to do something.”
414Life Outreach Supervisor David Sinclair echoed the call for strengthened intervention efforts, emphasizing the need for unified community action.
Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius also released a statement offering condolences:
“Our young people need us aligned, unafraid, and fully committed to real solutions to gun violence in our community. Our children’s lives depend on all of us acting with urgency.”
Following the incident, families were allowed to pick up their children early, while other students had the option to remain on campus until normal dismissal.
A $1,500 reward is being offered for any surveillance footage—such as Ring camera video—or information that could help identify additional suspects. Tips can be provided directly to Niema Chanell Ross at 414-429-4425.
