Man Charged After Wife Joanna Phillips Dies While He Was Out on Bond in Earlier Case

Authorities confirmed that a Sissonville man charged in the fatal shooting of his wife had previously been ordered to have no contact with her, according to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office and court records.
Law enforcement officials said 46-year-old Jason Joe Phillips contacted Metro 911 early Saturday morning and reported that he had shot his wife, Joanna Lynn Phillips, 46, inside their home in the 3500 block of Allens Fork Road.
Deputies responded to the residence and found Joanna Phillips deceased inside the home. Investigators later determined that she died as a result of a shotgun wound.
Jason Phillips was taken into custody at the scene without incident and was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
According to court documents and statements from authorities, Phillips was out on bond at the time of the shooting in connection with a prior domestic violence case involving the same victim.
Records show that Phillips was charged with domestic battery in March. In October, he turned himself in to authorities after being featured by the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office during a Domestic Violence Awareness Month segment.
Phillips was later released on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond. As part of the bond conditions, the court ordered him to have no contact with Joanna Phillips.
Following his arrest in the homicide case, Jason Phillips was transported to the South Central Regional Jail, where he remains in custody.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details at this time.
