GAINESVILLE GEORGIA, The wife of a Georgia teacher who died after a student prank is asking prosecutors to drop charges against the teenagers involved, calling the incident a tragic accident rather than a crime.

Jason Hughes, 40, a math teacher at North Hall High School and father of two, died Friday night after he was struck by a pickup truck as students fled his home during a late-night toilet-paper prank on March 5, authorities said.

According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, five 18-year-old students went to Hughes’ home around 11:40 p.m. to cover his yard with toilet paper as part of an annual junior-senior prank tradition. When Hughes came outside and approached them, the teens attempted to leave in two vehicles.

During the commotion, Hughes reportedly fell into the street, where he was struck by a pickup truck. The educator was taken to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.

Authorities said the students stopped to help Hughes and attempted to provide first aid until emergency responders arrived at the scene.

Following the incident, 18-year-old Jayden Ryan Wallace, who was driving the truck, was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering on private property.

Four other students — Elijiah Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz — were also arrested outside Hughes’ home and charged with criminal trespass and littering.

In a statement released Sunday, Hughes’ wife, Laura, who also works as a teacher at North Hall High School, said the family supports having the charges dropped against the students involved.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring that could ruin the lives of these students,” she said, adding that pursuing prison time would go against her husband’s lifelong dedication to supporting young people.

Family members told media outlets that Hughes was aware of the prank and had been expecting the students. They said rain earlier that evening may have caused him to slip and fall into the roadway as the students were leaving.

According to officials, the students involved could face significant legal penalties if the charges proceed.

School officials had reportedly warned students earlier that day that the yearly prank tradition could go too far if not handled responsibly.

As of Monday, the Hall County District Attorney’s Office had not issued a statement regarding whether the charges will be reconsidered.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe fundraiser created to support Hughes’ family has raised more than $221,000. The funds are expected to help cover immediate expenses and contribute to a college fund for the couple’s sons.
