Authorities said 55-year-old Davide Veglia and his 14-year-old son were aboard a seven-foot inflatable dinghy when another vessel struck them, ejecting both into the water.

Rescue teams recovered the victims and transported them to a nearby hospital. Veglia later died from his injuries, while his son remained hospitalized with a broken arm.

Witnesses in the area reported hearing the crash and calls for help. Two nearby teenagers said they contacted emergency services after hearing the child calling out. They also described seeing a larger boat moving quickly through the area around the time of the incident.

Officials described the vessel involved as a dark blue boat with a black bottom, estimated to be between 20 and 30 feet in length and possibly equipped with multiple outboard engines. It was last seen traveling north from the Meloy Channel between 7:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.

Authorities noted that it remains unclear whether the smaller dinghy had its lights activated at the time of the collision.
