Authorities identified the officer involved as Berneil Pinder of the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Officials stated that the officer discharged his weapon after the situation escalated.

Police said that during the incident, an individual entered a vehicle and allegedly drove it toward the officer in a threatening manner. The officer reported fearing for his safety and fired a single shot, which resulted in fatal injuries.

However, statements from the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas indicated that Castillo was unarmed at the time. It was also reported that the officer may have followed Castillo to his vehicle before the shooting occurred.

Cody Castillo, originally from Huntsville, Texas, was living in Crawfordville, Florida. Family and friends described him as a kind and calm individual.

The U.S. Embassy has called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability. As of now, no charges have been filed against the officer involved.

Bahamas officials confirmed that a criminal investigation has been opened. Authorities stated that if evidence supports it, charges could be filed as the investigation progresses.

According to a fundraising page created for the family, Castillo was working in the Bahamas as an electric lineman, helping upgrade power infrastructure for Bahamas Power and Light through a contracting company.

The fundraiser also noted that Castillo and his wife, Makayla, were expecting their first child in August. He had planned to return home soon but did not make it back.

This case marks one of several incidents this year involving off-duty officers in the Bahamas. The investigation remains ongoing.
