BARCELONA SPAIN, Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, has died by euthanasia after a prolonged legal battle involving her family and Spanish courts.

Castillo had been left paraplegic following a fall in 2022, which occurred after a traumatic incident involving a reported sexual assault. Medical reports indicated that she suffered from chronic and severe pain with no expected improvement.

According to reports, she had a history of mental health treatment beginning in her early teens and had been diagnosed with conditions including obsessive-compulsive disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Over the years, Castillo had experienced multiple traumatic events, including prior incidents of sexual violence.

Her request for assisted dying led to a lengthy legal dispute, as her father challenged the decision in court. He argued that her mental health condition affected her ability to make such a decision.

Despite these objections, Spanish courts ultimately ruled in favor of Castillo’s request. The case later reached the European Court of Human Rights, which declined to intervene and allowed the process to move forward.

Castillo had publicly stated her wish to end her suffering, expressing that she had been clear about her decision from the beginning.

The euthanasia procedure was carried out after all legal challenges were exhausted.

The case has drawn attention to ongoing debates surrounding assisted dying, particularly issues related to mental health, personal autonomy, and legal safeguards in countries where euthanasia is permitted.

Spain legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide in 2021 for individuals with serious and incurable conditions who choose to end their lives under regulated circumstances.
