ATLANTA, a Georgia teenager is continuing her recovery after being shot by an unknown suspect just seconds after she finished livestreaming on Instagram.
Raven Brown had been counting down to her 18th birthday on the night of Feb. 1 while celebrating during an Instagram live video. Speaking with local ABC affiliate WSB, Brown said she was in her bedroom at her Atlanta home chatting with friends online. Moments after ending the livestream, she heard multiple gunshots and immediately felt pain.
Brown told WSB that she collapsed to the floor as her arm and fingers went numb. She said her brother asked if she was okay, and she responded that she had been shot.
According to a brief statement shared with Law&Crime, the Atlanta Police Department responded to a report of a person shot at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Feb. 1. Officers arrived to find Brown suffering from a gunshot wound but conscious and breathing. Police said Brown attempted to take cover after hearing the gunfire but was struck before she could fully move to safety.
Brown was the only person injured in the incident. However, investigators noted that a vehicle parked outside the family’s home sustained damage from gunfire.
In an interview with local Fox affiliate WAGA from her hospital room, Brown said she did not immediately realize she had been shot until she fell to the floor. She then ran to her mother’s room to tell her what had happened.
Brown remains hospitalized after suffering a broken shoulder and a broken rib. She told WAGA that the bullet remains inside her body after doctors determined it was too close to a major artery to safely remove.
Her family has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover medical expenses and support the household while Brown recovers. According to the fundraiser, her mother took time off from work to care for her daughter during her recovery.
Police said shell casings were recovered at the scene, but no suspect has been identified. The investigation remains ongoing.
